International Grantmaking

In our era, the world seems to be shrinking. Catastrophes across the globe reach television screens and the Internet nearly instantly. Commerce is carried out globally, and with employees moving to different continents or communicating daily with colleagues across the globe.

So it’s no surprise that increasing numbers of people are interested in supporting causes outside U.S. borders. Many GCF donors accomplish this by making grants from donor advised funds to U.S. public charities that operate international programs (such as Doctors without Borders or CARE) or to U. S. public charities which are set up as “friends of” a foreign charity (like Friends of McGill University).

But sometimes, there is a need to go beyond, to work more directly with foreign charities who are “on the ground” in a country where the donor wants to make a difference.  Donors can now use their donor advised funds to make grants to benefit foreign charities through carefully selected U.S. intermediary organizations which perform important due diligence functions.

GCF staff can help donors
to identify the intermediary group right for the part of the world the donor wants to support. And if a donor wants to support a specific type of project (for example, a clean water project in Africa), but doesn’t know how to go about it, GCF and the intermediary organization can help.

We are happy to be able to assist donors in supporting their charitable interests beyond our U.S. borders. If you would like more information, please contact a member of GCF’s Giving Strategies Group at (513) 241-2880.
